Abstract

This study investigated lexical and nonlexical semantic processing in people with aphasia. Eight participants were included in the study, and were divided into three groups: low and high comprehension aphasia groups, and a normally-aging adult control group. Participants passively viewed semantically related and unrelated lexical and picture pairs with event-related potential data collected from seven electrode sites. Results were analyzed using the following data: N400 onset and peak latencies, and N400 peak amplitudes. Results were discussed in relation to previous ERP findings in aphasia research, and suggest that both lexical and nonlexical semantic processing may be disrupted in aphasia.
