Abstract

Seven patients with TBI participated in a single subject experimental design intervention study to train metaphor comprehension. The theory motivating the program posits roles for coarse-grained semantic knowledge and working memory. Two patients showed strong evidence for improvement in metaphor interpretation associated with the start of training, three participants showed some evidence, and two patients showed no evidence for any impact of training. Results indicate the potential of an evidence-based approach for treating deficits associated with TBI in patients with moderate to severe cognitive-linguistic deficits. The paper describes the program and discusses individual performances.
